Entrepreneurial Approaches to Providing Critical Services
Acumen Fund’s investments in Pakistan are supporting innovative business models in the housing, health, water and agriculture sectors.
Kashf is a pioneer in extending access to financial products to poor customers.
While Pakistan has experienced rapid economic development in recent
years, approximately 66% of Pakistan's 170 million people live on less
than $2 a day. Pakistan's challenge is how to address its citizens'
basic needs on a large scale.
Acumen Fund has been investing
in Pakistan since 2002 and established a local office in Karachi in
2006. As of November 2011, we have invested $14.9 million in
organizations building sustainable, scalable solutions to poverty.
Investees include organizations providing slum-dwellers with
affordable, legal housing; microfinance institutions offering
innovative financial services that allow low income clients to raise
their incomes and purchase health insurance; enterprises focused on
affordable agricultural inputs such as livestock enhancement and drip
irrigation; and a company establishing community water systems to
provide safe drinking water in urban areas.
Acumen Fund's on the ground presence in Pakistan enables the team to better identify investment opportunities and to provide ongoing management support to our investees. Our local community of supporters - partners, advisors, and others who share our values and vision - work with us to help us realize this vision.
Acumen Fund Pakistan benefits from Acumen Fund's global networks while leveraging strong relationships with local businesses, institutions and community leaders such as Citigroup, JS Group, Abraaj Capital, Aman Foundation, TiE, Lahore University of Management Sciences, and the Institute of Business Administration. Globally, more than 40 Pakistanis are partners of Acumen Fund, providing significant support to our work in Pakistan and around the world.
