Despite its ongoing economic growth, India is home to 40 percent of the world's poor, with 80 percent of its 1.1 billion people living on less than two dollars a day.

Addressing a mix of both urban and rural poor, Acumen Fund's investments in India reflect a range of sustainable, scaleable businesses that use market-based approaches to deliver products and services.

In health, such enterprises include emergency medical services, rural distribution networks for health and information services, health clinics and pharmacies. Investments in water focus on water both for consumption and for livelihoods, so enterprises may use various technologies to provide safe water or create solutions for farmers for whom water management can mean increased crop and income. Our team in India is actively exploring further investments in healthcare services (health insurance, skills training and diagnostics) potential investments in housing (e.g., mortgages and home improvement loans) and energy services.
