Acumen Fund’s investments in India are supporting some of the most innovative business models addressing critical challenges in the health, water, energy and agriculture sectors.
At least one-third of the planet faces severe water strain due to a shortage of fresh water resources or overuse of existing resources.
Despite its ongoing economic growth, India is home to 40 percent of the world's poor, with 80 percent of its 1.1 billion people living on less than two dollars a day. Innovative solutions are needed to close the gap in access to basic goods and services and to promote more inclusive growth.
Acumen Fund has been investing in India since 2001 and established a local office in 2006. As of November 2011, we have invested $21.6 million in sustainable, scalable organizations delivering affordable products and services to the poor in rural, peri-urban and urban areas. Our investments reflect the country’s global significance as a laboratory of innovation, both for individual enterprises and the impact investing field. Investees include hospitals providing low-cost maternity and ayurvedic care, an ambulance company providing emergency medical services for all, a company building community water systems, enterprises providing electricity access and a company distributing affordable drip irrigation products for smallholder farmers.
Acumen Fund India benefits from a strong local advisory board and maintains relationships with local financial services, consulting firms, academic institutions, industry associations, and government.
