Environment Planning Group Limited (EPGL) works to provide safe drinking water to poor Indian communities. EPGL’s filtration system reduces installation and maintenance costs, making purified water available to low-income communities for the first time.
The Challenge
- Water contamination is a major issue in India. More than 11 million people in Gujarat alone suffer from high levels of contaminants, but lack affordable alternatives or purification systems. And in Delhi, the majority of urban slum dwellers cannot access safe drinking water because of leaking sewage lines.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) technology is well suited to treat contaminants. But the initial capital and operational costs of RO systems put them out of reach for low-income communities.
The Innovation
- EPGL is a company based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, that has developed deep expertise in designing cost-effective RO systems. EPGL’s RO model drastically reduces initial installation costs and simplifies the maintenance of community water systems. Communities contribute a small, secured building and raw water, thereby lowering the price of purified water for the end customer.
The Impact
- EPGL currently operates a small number of water filtration plants. The company plans to expand over time to provide high-quality, affordable water to hundreds of thousands of people.
