Raj Kundra

Deputy Chief Investment Officer

Raj Kundra is currently Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Acumen Fund. Acumen is a U.S. based not-for-profit social venture fund, focused on investing debt or equity in small and medium enterprises that serve the poor. Acumen currently operates in South Asia and Africa, with offices in New York, Hyderabad, Karachi, Nairobi and Accra. Acumen focuses on investing patient capital in companies that bring basic goods and services to the poor – currently health, water, housing, renewable energy, agricultural inputs, and education.

As Deputy CIO, Raj oversees our global investing process, including management of our global investment committee, new investment originiation, and portfolio management. Raj also leads Acumen’s principal investing effort in renewable energy, where he led the portfolio launch in 2007 and in Capital Markets where he helped develop Acumen’s strategy to raising invested capital, including the successful closing of Acumen Capital Markets, our first invested social capital fund.

Prior to joining Acumen, Raj was Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers, New York. At Lehman, Raj worked in the Energy Division, where he focused on understanding investment opportunities and creating innovative financing/risk management solutions in this sector. Raj also worked in Lehman’s Emerging Markets and Capital Markets groups in various trading and structuring roles. Prior to joining Lehman, Raj was a Vice President at J.P. Morgan, where he oversaw the marketing and structuring of interest rate hedging products for U.S. corporations. Raj has a BS in Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Raj is a member of the Kauffman Society of Fellows (class 14). The Kauffman Society is a network of venture capitalists operating at 160 venture organizations in 26 countries on 6 continents, collectively deploying $50B in capital.
